What Exactly Happens in a Life Coaching Session?

I get a lot of questions about what it is exactly I do, and what a session with me looks like, so here you go:

During the session, I hold space for you while you get all your thoughts out, so we can take an objective look at them. Sometimes you might believe they are facts, or you might believe you are your thoughts. But there’s you and me over here, and then there’s your thoughts over there. They are not the same and  I never confuse the two. There is no judgement because whatever comes up, these are just your thoughts, not who you are. I help you challenge these thoughts, and together we see what results they are creating both in your external and internal life.


The basic model I use is the idea that there are circumstances in the world that are neutral. These circumstances triggers a thought.  That thought causes a feeling. That feeling drives our actions. Those actions determine our results.

Most of the time we think that it’s the situation that makes us feel how we feel. But it’s always our thought about it that causes the emotion. We say things like, “I am angry because she yelled at me”. But the reality is, she said some words, I interpreted them as “She disrespected me” and then I felt angry, not because of her yelling, but because of what I made it mean. 

Being able to understand this on a deeper level gives you back all your power, because you can’t always control the world (I can’t go back in time and change what she did), but you can always control how you think about it. 

I want to emphasize that is not creating affirmations or slapping a “pretty” thought over the one we  we don’t like. If our beliefs are strong they create strong feelings and sometimes we are not ready to let them go. So the first step is always processing feelings and accepting where we currently are. 


So here is the good news: Because deconstructing and questioning your beliefs is always available to you, no matter what it is you are going through, you can do something about it.
