Building An Intentional Money Mindset

Hello World!

Money… the root of all evil. We vilify it, but then we also want it. It’s a complicated relationship for many of us and it makes sense why we have less of it than we want. If we want more money, we need to clean up our mindset around it.

Here are some steps to create an intentional money mindset:

Step One - Look at your current situation objectively.

What are the actual facts of your situation? Some people might want to say, "I don't have any money". But looking at the facts, you might be able to see that in fact you have "$211.45 in your chequing account" and "$26 in cash". That helps you separate the facts from the story, which gives you some distance and perspective from your situation.  It can be empowering to realize first of all where you are at, with no judgement. The fact is "I have $267.11". With that neutral information, you can make informed decisions. When you think “I have no money”, it’s difficult to meet yourself where you are at and create next steps.

Step Two - Look at your thoughts about money

Write them all down on paper so you can look at them objectively. Notice that these are thoughts that might feel a lot like facts, but they are still just thoughts. Notice that these thoughts keep you in your money situation.

You can't snap your fingers and change your external situation, but the good news is you can change your thoughts, and therefore your money situation as a result of them. You can change your money mindset one thought at a time.

For example, a common thought is "Making more money than I need is greedy".

You can see how believing that would make it hard for you to earn more money because you don't want others (or yourself!) to see yourself as a greedy person.

Step Three - Challenge the thoughts that don’t serve you

- What does greedy mean?

- Why is earning more money than you need greedy?

- What if the opposite of that thought was true: how would earning more money help you to be more generous?

In this way you can start deconstructing your current money mindset and then start rebuilding it with intentional thinking that serves your goal.

You can do this by yourself or with a coach that can help you identify your blind spots. I would love to show you how working on your mindset can change your relationship with money and create more of it in your life.
