External Deadlines vs Internal Deadlines
Hello World,
Because many of us are spending more time at home and not having the same access to our IRL cues to get things done, I’ve been thinking a lot about external accountability.
We tend to think that outside things are responsible for us doing things:
I need to go to an office so I can start work on time
I need my boss to set a deadline so I can complete this project
I need to schedule a class so I can exercise
The problem with that is that we then think that without them, we can’t do what we want.
But here’s the thing,
while external accountability is definitely a tool we can use, it’s important to understand that it’s never the thing that’s making us take action:
It’s always the way we think about it that creates that action.
When your boss sets a deadline for a project, you make a decision in your mind to get it done before the deadline.
Some people don’t care about their bosses setting deadlines, so having deadlines or not doesn’t change anything for them,
which means that deadlines are meaningless, until we give them meaning ourselves.
External deadlines just trigger our internal deadlines.
And the amazing thing is, WE are the ones who decide to create internal deadlines,
And we don’t need external deadlines for that.
Ask yourself:
What are the external cues that get me to do things?
ex: boss-set deadlineHow am I thinking about those cues?
ex: Showing up as my best self to work is important to me.What is a goal I have and what is my internal deadline? And how can I apply my thinking in 2 to it?
ex: I want to film my dance video at 5pm today —> Showing up as my best self in my dance life is important to me.
Finally, this is what I want to offer to you:
You are amazing and are so much more capable than you even know. Until you believe in yourself fully, I will be here believing in you :)
