Stealing Your Own Time

Hello World,

Where are you stealing your own time?

I have big dreams and I know they don’t “just” happen.

It takes conscious effort to:

  1. Admit to myself what I want

  2. Write it down and make it real

  3. Break it down into manageable steps

  4. Schedule all the steps in my calendar

  5. Do the tasks I’ve assigned when that calendar block comes up

Each of those steps have their difficulties, but for me, the hardest is the fifth.

When the time to do the thing comes up, my brain offers me all manner of words to convince me to stay safe in the cave, i.e. do nothing:

“I don’t want to do this.”

“I’m so tired.”

“It’s doesn’t matter if I don’t do it.”

“I’ll just do it tomorrow.”

And then my brain suggests my avoidance mechanism of choice (social media):

“I can do it later when I have more energy - now I should rest by going on Facebook.”

“I need to make sure I respond to my clients right away, I better check my emails right now.”

“Just a quick peak on Instagram and then I’ll get back to work.”

It’s so interesting how I try to convince myself not to do the things that I actually want to do.

In the moment, I try and steal my own time.

But since I’ve started applying coaching tools on myself, I can recognize these siren calls as just thoughts that my brain is offering me, rather than instructions on what to do with my time.

If I happen to react and indulge in the urge, I don’t beat myself up. I look back and analyze what happened so I can learn from it and prevent it in the future.

It’s all just a practice and a skill that can be built.

What about you, what are the ways you steal your time?

Your time is one of the most precious things you have. You only have a limited amount of it to create the life you want. If you are struggling to turn a goal into reality, I get it. It’s tricky having a human brain. But luckily, the same brain that trips you up, is the same brain you can use to get what you want. In a 60 min free coaching session I would love to show you some effective and simple tricks to organize your brain and your life.
