Becoming your future self
During my Zoom yoga class this week, one of my colleagues commented on the fact that I was dressed up.
It didn’t even occur to me that this was "a thing" because it's just something I do now:
Every morning, I go to my closet, pick something nice to wear, put on some makeup, do my hair.
Even when I literally won't see anyone that day.
(Which, let's be real, during pandemic times, since I live alone, is pretty often.)
I used to think it was a waste of time, but then I thought:
Would my Future Self, the one who makes 100K a year, hang out in PJs all day?
Would that Future Self not take the time to care about what feels and looks good to her for herself?
How would my Future Self be thinking and acting?
And it got me thinking of where I wasn't stepping into my Future Self right now:
...Oh, hello dirty dishes piling up in the sink...
...hello procrastination...
...hello scrolling on Instagram for hours...
...hello complaining about how hard things are...
...hello beating myself up for not being good enough...
This is not how she would act, so how could I achieve her goals if I continued to do those things?
I realized, if I want to achieve my goals, I need to become her NOW.
Think about an NBA player: they wouldn't wait to be drafted to start practising drills and leveling up. They would practice first, get the skills and discipline of an NBA player, and only then would they get drafted.
We think we need to wait until we reach our goal before we change.
But we’ve got it wrong,
We need to change FIRST, and BECOME the kind person who has achieved the goal: doing what they do, thinking like they do, believing like they do.
Then achieving the goal is inevitable.
